History of Holt & Delhi Township
The earliest settlers in Delhi were Frederick R. Luther on May 4, 1837 and John Norris on May 22, 1837. Other early settlers include William Wood, Joseph Wilson, Philander Morton, David Wait, Alonzo Douglass, George Phillips, and the North family. Most of Delhi's early residents came from New York, Ohio, and Detroit.
Delhi was originally part of Alaiedon Township, but on February 16, 1842, Delhi became a congressional township by an act of the state legislature. The first official meeting of the township was held on April 4, 1842. The first election was held on April 7, 1842, it was then that the first township officials were elected:
Henry Harrison North, supervisor (16 votes)
Caleb Thompson, clerk (20 votes)
Roswell Everett, treasurer (20 votes)
The main community in Delhi Township was known as Delhi Center. On February 10, 1860, Delhi Center was renamed Holt to avoid confusion with Delhi Mills in Washtenaw County, Michigan. The name Holt was chosen to honor Hon. Joseph Holt, Postmaster General of the United States under the Buchanan administration.
